I am extremely excited to announce that my fourth book is set to be released next month!  Introducing…The Women’s Football Encyclopedia!

A Three-Year Journey

Writing books about sports is my passion…it’s what I love to do.  I previously authored three books, all related to the Iowa Hawkeyes: Hawkeye Greats By the Numbers in 2010, What It Means to Be a Hawkeye in 2011, and Duke Slater in 2012.

When Duke Slater came out in the fall of 2012, I had just gotten married to my wife, Ashley.  I decided to take a full year away from writing.  I was burnt out after having put out three books in three years, I wanted to take a little time to enjoy being a newlywed, and I wanted to spend a little extra time promoting Duke Slater (a phenomenal story and man…seriously, check him out when you have a chance).

As I enjoyed my yearlong writing hiatus, my wife became involved with women’s football, trying out for the D.C. Divas and playing as a rookie in 2013.  I also got involved with the team…I had an opportunity to cover the Divas, writing game recaps and player profiles.  It gave me a chance to try sports writing in a different format than books, and I have greatly enjoyed the experience.

I was fairly surprised that no one had written an authoritative book about the sport of women’s football before.  When my writing hiatus ended in late-2013, I decided I needed to write a book about women’s football.  At first, of course, I entertained the thought of writing a book about a season with the D.C. Divas (basically Victorious in book form, or, for those familiar with sportswriting, Season on the Brink for women’s football).

Two problems…a lot of the juicy inside gossip and such that would have given a women’s football book a Season on the Brink flair is stuff I wouldn’t feel comfortable publishing and stuff that would probably alienate me from anyone and everyone in the entire sport.  I don’t want to betray anyone’s trust by dishing inside dirt…I’m not that kind of writer.

Just as importantly…I didn’t want to just write a book about the D.C. Divas.  I wanted this book to be my grand love letter to women’s football…ALL of women’s football.  And the idea of The Women’s Football Encyclopedia was hatched.

I started researching this book in 2013 and started writing it late that year.  I knew I wanted it to come out in the offseason, so I initially planned a fall/winter 2014 release.  But then my wife and I were blessed in September 2014 with our darling baby girl, Magnolia.  Needless to say, the book had to be delayed until this offseason.

The release of the book has seen further delays the past couple of months.  My last two books were published by major trade publishers, but this will be the first book ever released under my new Rozehawk Publishing imprint.  Taking care of all the editing, design work, and other tasks normally associated with a publisher took a little longer than I anticipated, but after a few twists and turns, The Women’s Football Encyclopedia is scheduled to be released in January 2016!

What Is The Women’s Football Encyclopedia?

The Women’s Football Encyclopedia is the first authoritative history ever compiled on the under-publicized sport of women’s football.  What can women’s football fans hope to find in The Women’s Football Encyclopedia?

The core of the book is over 5,000 individual game results dating back to 1999.  These game results are displayed two different ways.  One section of the book is a chronological history of the sport, covering every season since 1999 and every league that played that season.  You can see the standings and game results for 16 former and current women’s football leagues, year by year.

The game results are also displayed in another section: the franchise section.  Fans can look up their favorite team and see their year-by-year records and their game-by-game results.  And one of the best parts of the franchise section is that many franchises have all-time player registers, which list the players who suited up for each team over the years.  In all, over 10,000 female football players are listed in these registers…if you played women’s football at any point over the last ten years, there’s a very good chance you will be listed by name in this book!

Also included in the book are chapters on the “first era” of women’s football from the 1960s through the 1980s, a chapter on international women’s football, and so much more!  This book will be the definitive history of our sport and a must have for every fan of women’s football!

As mentioned, The Women’s Football Encyclopedia is set to be released in January…I’ll have an exact date soon and much, much more information to come about the book and how to order it over the next few weeks.  Stay tuned, and thanks for your continued support!
