African-Americans in Hawkeye Sports, 1895-1961

The University of Iowa has a long and noteworthy history of providing athletic opportunities for African-Americans, particularly during times when such opportunities were uncommon elsewhere.  As part of Black History Month, I think it’s important to take a look at some of these pioneers for African-Americans in Hawkeye sports and recognize their accomplishments. Hawkeye Videos: The Fame of the Black and Gold

In another installment of Hawkeye Videos, here are three Duke Slater video clips for Hawk fans to enjoy! Duke Slater, All-American Because Duke Slater retired from the NFL over eighty years ago, it’s exceedingly difficult to find video footage of the football legend.  I have looked everywhere for film of Duke, but so far, I have only been able to uncover one short clip where Slater is clearly identifiable. Holiday Hawkeye Performances

The holiday season is here, which means we’ve hit a slow period in Hawkeye sports.  Iowa wrestling is on hiatus until 2013.  Iowa men’s basketball has only tonight’s contest with Coppin State left until the opening of the Big Ten season against Indiana on New Year’s Eve.
