Hawkeyes Revisited: Nile Kinnick

This post was originally designed to close out Heisman Trophy week, but life intervened.  After a brief delay, it’s time to revisit the most beloved Iowa football player of all – 1939 Heisman Trophy winner Nile Kinnick. A Quintessential Iowan One of the main reasons why Iowa fans love Nile Kinnick is because he was one of us.  Nile Clarke Kinnick, Jr., was born on July 9, 1918, during the peak of World War I.  Nile was the oldest of three boys born to Nile Clark Kinnick, Sr., and Francis Clarke.  Francis’ father, George W. Random Hash

So much to report…guess it’s time to hash it out!  With a nod to Gus Schrader, here’s this week’s random hash. A Personal Update Sad to say, I was put on the DL this past weekend.  I was peacefully sleeping in my bed at around 2:30 AM when my apartment building’s fire alarms went off.  My apartment’s fire alarms are just insanely loud, loud enough to scare the ever living daylights out of you when they’re triggered.  Well, here it is, 2:30 AM in the morning, pitch black, when I’m jolted from my sleep by these incredibly loud, screeching alarms. Random Hash

It’s good to be back!  I had a terrific time in Iowa visiting family over Thanksgiving.  My wife and I were at Kinnick Stadium on Friday, and the season really came full circle for me.  I was in Chicago at Soldier Field when the 2012 Hawkeyes kicked off the season with a victory over Northern Illinois, and I watched them suffer a tough loss against Nebraska to end the year. It was a frustrating season, obviously.  The game against Nebraska was there for the taking…14 points would have gotten the job done.  Just two touchdowns!  But just like the game…
