Duke Slater on the University of Iowa Wall of Honor

Last year, I outlined six goals for bringing “Justice to the Judge” and restoring Duke Slater to his rightful place among America’s sports legends.  One of those goals was seeking a permanent recognition of Slater at the University of Iowa’s Kinnick Stadium.  On August 31, 2013, I’m thrilled to say that the first of these six projects was completed when the school unveiled the University of Iowa Wall of Honor! Kinnick Stadium Recognition

(This is part of a special series on getting “Justice for the Judge.”) Kinnick Stadium Recognition Every good Hawkeye fan knows that Iowa’s home football venue, Kinnick Stadium, is named after 1939 Heisman Trophy winner, Nile Kinnick. The stadium was originally named Iowa Stadium, but it was renamed in Kinnick’s honor in 1972.  What many Hawkeye fans may not know is that in 1972, there was a substantial movement to rename Iowa Stadium…Kinnick-Slater Stadium! Fixing Slater Hall

(This is part of a special series on getting “Justice for the Judge.”) The University of Iowa named one of their residence halls after Duke Slater in 1972. Slater Hall serves as the University of Iowa’s tribute to Duke’s career, and it was a wonderful gesture at the time. Today, however, the memorial has fallen short of its intended purpose.
